Background of the Study
Corruption in local government elections remains a persistent problem in Nigeria, undermining the credibility and fairness of electoral processes. In Girei LGA, Adamawa State, allegations of vote-buying, electoral violence, and manipulation have marred local elections. This study will examine the extent and nature of corruption in Girei LGA elections, exploring the forms of electoral malpractice and their consequences for democratic governance (Ibrahim & Salihu, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to curb corruption in elections, local government elections in Nigeria continue to suffer from malpractices, especially in rural areas like Girei LGA. This study will investigate how corruption manifests in local elections and its impact on the electoral process and public trust in governance.

To assess the prevalence and forms of corruption in local government elections in Girei LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the 2015-2023 local government elections in Girei LGA. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining reliable data on electoral corruption and potential biases in interviews with political stakeholders.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Corruption: The abuse of power for personal gain, including electoral malpractices such as vote-buying, ballot-stuffing, and political manipulation.
Electoral Malpractices: Illegal or unethical activities that interfere with the fairness of elections, including fraud, violence, and manipulation of results.
Political Legitimacy: The acceptance of a government or electoral process as valid and authoritative by the public.
